Grania-Oi is the most recent of a group of five barrel houses.  The basis of this house is a 6.7m diameter ‘marrying vessel’ from a nearby Speyside distillery.  The vessel is raised on a sandstone plinth which, in combination with excavation, effectively creates a 2 storey house.  The carefully positioned spiral stair and landings provide virtually all the circulation required to a series of interlocking spaces on 4 different levels.  This intriguing design grew from the desire to retain that most special experience of the full round within the house.
